Thanks to computers, image editing has become easier than ever. With the right tools, you can edit your photos just like the pros. Today, many free editing tools are available online. The following are six free online image editing tools and why they’re great:
- Pixlr.com – Pixlr was developed by Autodesk, the world’s leading computer-aided design software developer. With Pixlr, you can either edit an existing photo or create an image from a sketch online. Editing tools include red eye reduction, sepia tones, solarization, and much more.
- Online-image-editor.com – Online Image Editor is the free online image editor that also lets you create completely online animations. Basic image editing tools include resizing and cropping, adding text or borders, or adding fun photo add-ons, like masks on your photo subjects. You can even overlay your uploaded images with predefined animations or add your own twinkle stars or glitter.
- Fotoflexer.com – FotoFlexer touts itself as “the world’s most advanced online digital photo editor.” Founded by Arbor Labs, FotoFlexer includes a variety of professional photo editing tools all online and all for free. These include special effects, adding shapes, doodling, distortions, text, photo retouching, and many other advanced tools. Upload a photo from your computer or from any of several online photo storage sites, such as Photobucket, Myspace, Facebook, Flickr, or Picasa.
- Phixr.com – Phixr is a free online photo editor that allows users to simply edit their photos in their Web browser. This easy-to-use site is excellent when you are away from your computer and need simple photo editing. Rotate, adjust, and remove red eye from your photos. You can also change your pictures to sepia tone or black and white and add text or speech bubbles.
- Picnik.com – Picnik offers one of the most popular online image editing websites. You can edit your photos with just one click or use their advanced controls to edit your photos in greater detail. A multitude of fonts and special effects make your pictures unique. Picnik works with Windows, Mac, and Linux. Upload your photos from your computer or from Picasa, Flickr, Facebook, or Photobucket.
- Flauntr.com – FlauntR was created by FotoDesk. It offers several fun online photo editing tools to make your photos unique. Try their one-click effects to add pizzazz. Use their one-click editing options to instantly improve your photos. You can even blend world famous paintings into your pictures, add fonts, and so much more.

I use Pixlr to edit some photos when I get lazy tinkering Photoshop. By the way, Picnok’s closing down on April.

AWESOME! One of my projects for the year is to do images with backgrounds dropped, so this is just what I would have been looking for!
Cindy, another great free application is GIMP, however this is a download and installed on your computer, as opposed to an online application. A lot of folks are comparing it to Photoshop, so if you’re feeling adventurous give it a try!
