Ten Ways to Improve your Website Quickly

If your website is in need of a pick-me-up and time is an issue, here are ten quick and easy ways to give your site a lift. Implement just one a day and in ten days your website will be well on its way to becoming  more efficient and user-friendly, allowing your visitors an easier way to find what they need from you, and not move on to someone else’s website.

  1. Write an article about what you do and post it on your website. Then submit it to an online article directory, such as Ezine. Once there, you’ll be surprised at how your article will find its way around the world. I have found my articles posted on websites in numerous different countries, much to my surprise.
  2. If you haven’t done so already, change your layout from tables to CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). Okay, this task might not be as quick as some of the others to accomplish, but it is well worth the effort and time. CSS layout provides much greater flexibility in your design, and is more easily crawled by search engines, in that there is not as much code for the spiders to wade through. Additionally, pages created with CSS layout will load faster, providing a much better experience for your visitor.
  3. Update your graphics. This means not only using fresh images, but making sure they are all optimized so that they load quickly. Also, make sure your graphics and images all have alt tags so that the text will be crawled by search engines. Search engines don’t see images, so these tags are very important.
  4. Speaking of search engines……follow my SEO tips! Great ideas for improving your site’s search engine rankings.
  5. Make sure your navigation is user friendly. The last thing you want your visitor to do is click around 3 or 4 times and not find what they’re looking for. While you may be able to get around your site well enough, put yourself in your visitor’s shoes and go at it from their perspective. Imagine that you’re not that familiar with what you’re selling and you have no idea where to go. If it takes too long for a visitor to find what they want, they will go somewhere else.
  6. Check your site for broken links. There is nothing more frustrating to me then finally finding what I want and clicking on the link and the dreaded “Page not found” error message appears! I will quickly just find another site to go to, as will most people.
  7. Use white space to your advantage. Just because you have an empty spot on your page, doesn’t mean that it has to be filled up with meaningless stuff. Less IS more, in so many cases, so don’t ruin a good thing. Make your content count. The more your visitor has to wade through to find what they want, the higher the chances of them leaving.
  8. Put client testimonials on your site. People love reading about how awesome you are to work with, so give them what they want!
  9. Add an “About Us” page, if you don’t already have one. It’s okay to get a little personal with your customers and let them know that you’re a real person with a story.
  10. Get into Social Media and blogging. A Facebook Fan page is a great way to keep in touch with your clients by offering them little tidbits of help and information on a regular basis. Facebook is a great networking tool and a definite asset to any business trying to establish a presence on the internet. A big part of Social Media includes blogging, so don’t ignore this aspect. Blogs provide you with a quick and easy way to change your content regularly, which search engines love, thereby allowing your site to be crawled regularly and found by potential clients from all over the world.
