Every now and again, WordPress will come out with updates to their platform and you will need to update your version of WordPress so that you will be able to use all the new features that are included with the new version.
This is very easy to do, and just requires a few minutes of your time, and it is well worth it. WordPress always provides great new usability features to make things easier, with each of their updates. The last 2 have been great!
As of this post date, the most recent version of WordPress is 3.3.1, so if you are using a different version, follow the instructions below to update.
If you haven’t yet updated, when you log in to your dashboard, you will see a screen similar to the image below (depending on what version you are currently using). You can see at the top what the latest release is and a link to update your version. ***Please note: if you haven’t backed up your site recently, do that first, BEFORE updating WordPress, just to be on the safe side.
When you click that link to update, WordPress will remind you that you should back up first. To back up your database, you can use the Tools > Export feature which is available in the left side navigation. To learn more about backing up your site, and see several methods that are available, please read this article How to Backup Your WordPress Blog.
After you have backed up, click on the link at the top of the screen that says “Please update now”. You will be taken to another screen for updating WordPress. You will see the reminder to back up your database above the area to update WordPress. Click on the blue Update Now button to update automatically.
Now just sit back and wait for WordPress to do its thing! When it’s complete, you will see a screen explaining the new features of the updated WordPress.
